The definition of British Values was set out by the government in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and added to Ofsted inspection guidance in July 2014 ‘to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’
At Buckingham Park these values are regularly promoted through high quality teaching, a rounded programme of worship time and a positive behaviour policy. This provision allows pupils to develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
As well as teaching our pupils, our active promotion of these values also means we challenge pupils, staff or parents who express contrary opinions.
The government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy and these are promoted in the school in the following way:
Democracy – We elect members of the Pupil Parliament, Eco Warriors, Sports Leaders and House Captains. Year 6 act as our Pupil Advocates and we elect Buddies from these. All of these children represent us. Children regularly have the ability to play out democracy in their classes or as a school including voting for winners of the annual public speaking competition.
The rule of law – We work to abide by our set of school values and our class rules. We know what the levels mean in our Behaviour Policy and pupils see the value in enforcing these.
Individual liberty – We are made to feel safe and supported. Adults provide support via a number of avenues when needed. When we have a problem we are helped to solve it and we learn at Buckingham Park to 'disagree well'.
Mutual respect – We listen to each other and everyone has a talking partner. We respect each other and know our rights and responsibilities.
Tolerance – We value everybody and celebrate, not just recognise, different faiths and cultures within the school and the wider community. We are polite, kind and helpful to everyone. Our PSHE curriculum freely promotes no one 'family norm' but that families, parents and children come from wide ranging and diverse backgrounds.
