Reading

Picture
We do lots at Buckingham Park to promote children's reading - termly raffles, reading challenges in classes, modelling this to children and yesterday we spoke about the importance of reading for pleasure, this year as the national year of reading.

Please remember to read nightly - or at least five times a week with your children and record in their reading record. Children should be reading their own banded books from school which develop their own phonic knowledge and are benchmarked at the correct level of challenge for them - but all reading is good reading - read their own books, graphic novels, picture books, comics, newspapers or anything else.

Turn it into a game with the little ones - my little girl loves trying to read some key words from our shopping lists in Tesco, or playing phonics games where we ask her to collect the 'p-i-g' from the toy basket, for example.

Research shows that Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator of a child's future success, outweighing family background, income, or parents' education. It boosts cognitive performance, empathy, and mental health, while regular, independent reading is strongly linked to higher attainment across all subjects.

The article above is useful and discusses how the use of books can support children with language delay from an early age - worth a quick read!
