Universal Free School Meals for Infant Children

5/9/2014

Picture
From the beginning of this term,  every pupil in reception, year 1 and 2 will be eligible for free school meals.  We are making this really easy at Buckingham Park.  You do not need to pre-order, register, or complete any forms.  Every child will automatically be catered for.  Just come along and enjoy your meal!

We encourage as many children as possible to take up this entitlement but parents may still opt to send in a packed lunch instead.

For more information, please visit our School Meals page.

It's wonderful that the children are provided with a hot meal. However (week 7) dessert, toffee apple.....why, what's wrong with a plain.apple? The majority of the desserts are high in sugar. Surely the guidelines should suggest cutting down on sugar. This is leading to an increase in obesity, diabetes & tooth decay.

Thank you for your comment. It is, indeed, wonderful that children have the opportunity to have a hot meal each day.

The dessert to which you refer is a toffee apple sponge pudding, rather than a toffee apple. Chef Fraser works really hard to offer fruit based puddings and uses natural fruit juices to add sweetness wherever possible, rather than refined sugar.

There is always fresh fruit and yoghurt available to the children as an alternative to the dessert listed on the menu and lots of children choose fruit each day.

We are planning a tasting session for parents very soon and you would be very welcome to raise any questions you have with the staff at that session.

Many thanks for the reply. We're looking forward to sampling the menu & meeting Chef Fraser on Wednesday. Our son has certainly been enjoying the meals :-)
