After a first cancellation, the weather Gods finally shone on us and we celebrated two amazing sports days.
Sports days at Buckingham Park work to primarily celebrate two things - sporting achievement and participation, but also sportmanship and inclusivity. Both of these were on show in spades - some amazing running, throwing and jumping but also such inclusivity - children and parents cheering for everyone, listening and being respectful and making sure that all were totally included in the two busy days. As always, we have music and commentary and a huge thanks here needs to go to Mr Perks - who organises all of the sporting events which are so famous at Buckingham Park and to his team of Y5 and Y6 helpers, who run, coordinate, score and officiate the events. Well done to all who were a part and thank you to so many parents for coming down and supporting your children and your school! Reception attended a Fairytale workshop at Waddesdon Manor this week where they focused on the story of Sleeping Beauty. The children went up to the Bakst room in the Manor to explore the Sleeping beauty paintings created by Leon Bakst. The children had great fun counting the 42 steps up to the turret room where the volunteers used the paintings to retell the story. The children also explored the Aviary and developed their descriptive language as they explored the grounds at Waddesdon Manor. In the afternoon the children spent time cutting and sticking the painting into the correct sequence. The highlight of the day for the children was the picnic lunch in the much appreciated shade.
The staff and volunteers at Waddesdon Manor where super impressed with the children's knowledge and manners throughout the trip! Likewise the children were so excited when they got back to school and spent the rest of the day talking about how kind and helpful they had been so decided to create some thank you cards to post out to the volunteers. Year 6 had a great time on their Bushcraft Residential to Point Blank last week. The children learnt to make fires and shelters, conceal themselves using nature, threw axes, archery and rifle shooting - all as well as making some very fine looking pizzas and sleeping under canvas. Thanks to Will and his team for the amazing trip! Great fun was had by all, a lot of pizza was eaten and the glad rags were dusted out of the wardrobe for the Year 6 Leavers party on Friday night.
Thanks all for coming, being so well behaved and for everything you have brought to our school throughout your 7 years here. All the best with your next steps and stay in touch! Children at Buckingham Park love their Art Week each year and this was no different! Each year, we theme a whole week of learning around a certain painting and get creative with art based activities relating to this. This year, we focussed on 'Men of the Docks' by George Bellows above and the children got engaged in art and other lessons around this painting. As always, we held an exhibition of all ot the children's creations in the hall. See a slideshow of their amazing work below: Football Fever has hit Buckingham Park!
Each class drew a team in Worship this morning - see above! The team who gets the furthest, or wins the World Cup will win extra playtime in the last week of school. Year 3 are looking strong as it stands... We would also like to welcome children to celebrate the start of the world cup with a football kit themed non-uniform day this Friday. Children will be encouraged to wear their favourite football kit, or colours of the country they are supporting. These can be any kits (not just national teams) as we want to celebrate the diversity of the tournament. I look forward to seeing the kits in their glory! We loved having Beatrice Simpkiss visit again today to share her new book 'Ziggy the caterpillar's zigzag adventure'. This has loved themes about tolerance and inclusivity and most importantly caters for our younger readers, unlike some of the other authors we have been luck enough to host.
Once again, thanks to Beatrice and the team at Our Bookshop in Tring for their ongoing support Get Ready for Buckingham Park’s Public Speaking Competition!
I am incredibly excited to announce that we are holding the Public Speaking Competition again. Public Speaking Competition! Last year, we heard so many amazing talks from children across Key Stage 2 and can’t wait to hear more again this year. Have you ever talked about your favourite hobby and could not stop? Do you love explaining how things work, sharing your passions, or making people laugh with a story or joke? Then this is your moment to shine! So, what is public speaking? It simply means standing up and speaking in front of an audience, in our case, your classmates. You choose a topic you know lots about – it could be football, animals, baking, gaming, history, dance, or even your pet hamster! You will write a short speech, practise it, and present it to your class. Originality is important here – something that people might not know about you, or that makes you, you! Here’s how it works: Class Heats: These will start from 2nd July, so get preparing! From this we will choose 4 children to represent each year group in the Semi-Finals. Semi-Finals: The 4 chosen speakers from each year group will perform in front of their phase (Y3/4 or Y5/6) on Thursday 9th July (Y3/4) or Friday 10th July (Y5/6). From this we will choose 2 children to represent each year group in the Finals. The Grand Final: The 2 chosen finalists from the Semi-Finals from each year group will then be heard on the morning of Wednesday 16th July, with a special audience… your parents and a selected panel of judges. It will be the judges’ unenviable task to choose the Winner, Runner-Up, and a Highly Commended Speaker. Everyone in Key Stage 2 will be having a go – this is all about being brave, sharing what you know. Part of the English Curriculum is Public Speaking so it fulfils this objective too. Whilst some will have confidence to speak in front of others, we are aware some would prefer to do this with a select few or even on their own with their class teacher. You will be surprised how quickly you will build confidence, learn something new, and inspire your friends too! So… start thinking, planning and practising – we cannot wait to hear what you have to say! Calling all Year 6 Parents/Carers 📣
